The final countdown is well and truly on for the 2019 Battle of the MX British Titles event at Landrake Moto Parc which hosts the final rounds of the Judd KTM British Youth Championship and Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship.
We caught up with Verde Sports KTM’s Liam Knight ahead of the weekend to catch up on the season so far and his plans coming into the event.
We are heading into the final round at Landrake on September 21stand 22nd. Can you tell us a bit about how your season has gone and what the highlights have been through the season?
Liam Knight: “Yeah this year has been a struggle from the start. I broke my hand at Hawkstone International. I then got glandular fever just before the opening round of the Maxxis. At Canada Heights I had a big crash resulting in an operation and missed two months of riding which didn’t help. It’s been a real uphill struggle, playing catch up all year with fitness to try to show what I am capable of. My best race so far was a fifth in race two at the last round at Foxhills, but none of my results are what I expect of myself after last year.”
At the last round at Foxhills you ended up 9thoverall. How was it for you and what did you think to the new layout of the track?
Liam Knight: “I actually enjoyed riding Foxhills, the new layout was fun it was a nice change for sure. It was a mixed day for me with a crash in the first turn of race one, but a fifth in race two. It was nice to be back in the top five.”
You are currently 7thin the British MX2 Championship with 38 points behind Ashton Dickinson. How does this feel for you and do you think you can end the season in the top 5?
Liam Knight: “The overall Championship position isn’t really something I am too focused on after missing a round and then the DNF at Canada Heights also. For me I just want to get two good starts and ride how I know I can and get a good result for the team. The whole Verde Sports Substance KTM team have been awesome this year and always giving 100% so would be nice to finish the year on a good result.”
Looking ahead to Landrake next weekend. What are your thoughts on the track? Is this a venue which you feel you will do well at?
Liam Knight: “It’s been a long time since I raced at Landrake. It’s a fast track and usually really technical. The starts are going to be really important and I think with two good starts it will be a good day.”
Can you tell us your plans/goals for the final round?
Liam Knight: “It would be nice to finish on the podium being the last round and after a tough year that would be great.”
This will be the first time that the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship and Judd KTM British Youth Championship have run together on the same weekend at the same venue. What are your thoughts on this, and do you think this is something that should happen more?
Liam Knight: “I think if it brings in more spectators and a bigger interest to the British Championship then it’s a positive for everyone. It’s nice to see new things being tried.”
