After Loket, the 2021 MXGP World Championship returns to a soft terrain and it is Lommel, Belgium, which hosted the sixth round. The circuit of Flanders is perhaps the most challenging of the World Championship, due to the very particular sandy surface that has earned it the nickname of “hell of sand”.
In qualifying, the Beta SDM Corse team riders were not able to find the right feeling with the track and Jeremy Van Horebeek closed with the 25th time while Jimmy Clochet, at his first time on the Lommel track, ranked 39th.
In race 1 Jeremy managed to get a good start which gave him the chance to recover positions. Van Horebeek rode with his usual grit and determination and finished the race 16th. Clochet was forced to retire after a crash.
Race 2 also saw an excellent exit from the gate for Van Horebeek, who made up five positions on the first lap. Unfortunately, in the early laps Jeremy found a rider stopped under a jump and couldn’t avoid him, crashing. The Belgian rider was able to recover quickly but later in the race he retired due to another fall.
Next appointment next weekend in Latvia at Kegums.
Daniele Marchese Team Manager SDM: “Unlucky day for our riders, since the qualifying session they have struggled to find the rhythm on the sandy ground. Jeremy wanted to do well in the home race but unfortunately he did not find the right feeling with the track, moreover the rain and the two crashes in race 2 compromised his result. Clochet had to retire in both races. A race to forget for our team, but we are already thinking about the next one in Kegums, to get back to the level of competitiveness we showed in the previous races”.
