SX Global, the official promoter of the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX), is delighted to confirm the appointment of Tom Burwell to the position of Chief Executive Officer. Andy Edwards will remain with SX Global as a trusted advisor to WSX. Words: WSX
Burwell joins SX Global and the WSX organisation at a critical time, as preparations for the series’ 2024 season continue following its recent calendar announcement, which revealed races in Vancouver, Perth and Abu Dhabi.
Holding a wealth of experience in the sports space, Burwell joins SX Global from Formula 1, where he served as the Associate Director of Race Promotion before moving to the role of Associate Director of Business Development & Sponsorship.
Before moving into motorsport, Burwell enjoyed an 11-year stint at Ultimate Rugby Sevens – eight of which he served as CEO, and was the Executive Tournament Director of Emirates Dubai 7s.
Given his impressive background, which includes elevating fan experiences, innovating in the global events space, and expanding into new markets – playing an instrumental role in Formula 1’s planned Madrid street race in 2026 – Burwell’s appointment as CEO will only serve to strengthen SX Global’s leadership team.
Tom Burwell, SX Global Chief Executive Officer: “I’m delighted to join SX Global as CEO, and I’m grateful to be entrusted with this opportunity. Motorsport is entering what can only be described as a renaissance, and from my time in Formula 1 and sport more broadly, it’s clear that our industry on a whole is booming. The FIM World Supercross Championship has incredible potential as a sporting product and global fan experience platform. With new races in Vancouver and Perth, and a return to Abu Dhabi which coincides with F1’s season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit, WSX’s 2024 season is only the start of a new exciting chapter. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, SX Global Co-Owner: “We are delighted with the addition of Tom to our leadership team, and I’m looking forward to seeing his vision for the FIM World Supercross Championship come to life. He brings the knowledge and expertise we need to accelerate our growth, and his ambition and naturally strategic mindset will play a critical role in turning the desire and demand for global Supercross into a reality worldwide.”
