Round 1 of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship took place at the Norfolk based “Lyng” track yesterday with a fantastic result for the Team Green backed Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki team.
Tommy Searle, who returns to Team Green for 2016 after a tough season last year stormed to a fantastic double win, moving into round 2 holding the sought after leaders red plate. It was a faultless day for the 26 year old KX450F rider as he finished qualifying as the fastest rider, ahead of closest rival and fellow GP rider, Shaun Simpson, by a huge 2 seconds.
In race 1, a slightly poor start left Tommy in 8th position after a few corners, but he quickly laid his intentions bare as a series of strong passes moved him to the front of the pack and that’s where he stayed for the remainder of the race, drawing out a 15 second lead by the time he took the chequered flag.
Race 2 saw Searle claim a better start as he took the hole-shot and commanded the race from start to finish, again with a huge gap back to last year’s Championship winner, Simpson.
This result will be a huge confidence boost for Searle and the whole team as they move in to this weekend’s round 3 of the MXGP season in the sand of Valkenswaard, where Tommy will be looking to build upon his tally of World Championship points.
Ross Burridge, Senior Racing Co-ordinator for Kawasaki Motors UK was upbeat about the result; “This is our first Overall MX1 British Championship win for quite some time, so I am over the moon for Tommy and the whole team. They did a fantastic job and were untouchable all day. I really hope that this will be a big boost for Tommy as he moves into similar conditions at this weekend’s GP of Europe in Holland.”
