Defending ProMX MX1 champion Kyle Webster made an impressive statement to begin the season opener in style by winning the first moto over title rival Jed Beaton at Wonthaggi, leading a thriller from start to finish. However, a dramatic crash in race two threw him off the bike, as he was forced to retire due to extensive damage to the bike. Words: Live MX Editor

Although the spill cost him valuable points to Beaton, the Boost Mobile Honda star confirmed that he’s largely fine following the incident, which is a huge positive considering the violent nature of the fall.

“What a bummer. I was happy with the first moto, even though I rode tight. I actually felt a lot better in race two, but I got caught out and hit the ground hard. This isn’t how I pictured round one, but that’s the reality of racing. I hurt my back a bit and I’ll be sore for a few days, but I got lucky – it could’ve been much worse,” explained Webster.

Now sitting 22 points behind Beaton after banking ninth overall at the opener, he’ll immediately switch his focus to the second stop on the calendar at Appin on April 13, where he’ll be looking to get his championship defence back on track.
