With the Thor British Youth National Championship heading into round three at Desertmartin, it’s a good time to catch up with a rider who is enjoying a strong season so far.
Howard Wainwright, who competes in the Open Class at the BYN, is currently leading his category as we head into the halfway point of the year. RHL Activities caught up with Howard to see how things are going back at base.
Round two saw you walk away with second overall for the weekend, how did you feel after the event at Brampton?
“Brampton was an overall good weekend for me. I walked away with second overall and extended my points lead in the Championship. There were lots of positives and negatives that I took away from Brampton and I’m working on improving for Desertmartin.”
Brampton was a tough sand track with some decent ruts showing up throughout the day’s racing that provided some great battles for us to see. What were your thoughts on the circuit?
“The track was awesome for me, the natural hillside layout makes for a superb circuit. The track builders did a mega job of getting it prepped for a great weekend of racing. The rain made it a bit tough on the Sunday, but overall for me it was a good weekend.”
You’re currently leading the British Youth National Open Class Championship, how does it feel for you?
“I’m very happy and proud to be leading the Championship so far, but of course there is plenty more racing to go until its over. Having the points lead does give me a boost in confidence for the remaining rounds, but as always it to does add to the pressure and nerves of wanting to finish up as the British Youth National Open Champion for 2017.”
Desertmartin is the next stop of the championship after a year off the calendar, how are you feeling for the ‘Desert’ and are you getting any training and practicing in prior to the event?
“I’ve never had the chance to ride the famous Desertmartin track, but I am very much looking forward to being there in a few weeks’ time.” Wainwright continues “Leading up to the event I will be continuing my weekly routine of training, riding and putting in the effort to keep getting good results for the rest of the year.”
Why do you enjoy racing the Thor British Youth National Championship?
“I’ve always enjoyed racing the Thor British Youth Nationals, as it makes for great racing as there is a lot of competition throughout all classes. The venues that are chosen also never seem to disappoint.”
Finally, how did you get into motocross?
“I got into motocross because it’s a family sport and both my dad and brother did and still continue to race to date, along with other family members. It was only natural that I grew up riding into the sport which I did from the age of three and I have never looked back.”
